MONSUMMANO TERME PRIMARY SCHOOL

This proposal for a new educational complex responds to the need for a primary school in Monsummano Terme while simultaneously reinforcing the relationship between the urban fabric of this small Tuscan town and an adjacent area that, despite its location just beyond the city limits, remains largely underused. The project positions the school as a mediator between the consolidated town and its peripheral landscape, transforming a marginal site into an active civic space.

The C-shaped building defines a new urban block through three solid fronts facing north, south, and east, creating a clear spatial boundary and a sense of enclosure appropriate to its educational function. Toward the west, the building opens up into a more articulated and fragmented form, shaping a sequence of generous green spaces and outdoor playgrounds directly connected to the classrooms and dedicated to students’ daily activities.

Located at the north-east corner of the site, the library occupies a strategic position that allows it to remain accessible beyond school hours. Conceived as a quasi-independent element, it extends the role of the school beyond education alone, enhancing the complex’s civic presence and contributing to the cultural life of the wider community.
