B&J HOUSE
This project involves the complete renovation of a traditional 1980s Finnish rivitalo. The intervention rethinks the internal layout to support the needs of family of three, including the possibility to work comfortably from home , while preserving domestic privacy.
The layout is reorganized into two clearly defined zones. The daytime living areas open toward a small, private yard, ensuring both daylight and privacy. A more efficient service core is introduced, featuring a larger bathroom with sauna, an additional toilet an accessible laundry area, integrated in the circulation for space optimisation. The kitchen is redesigned with an open island, directly connected to the dining and living areas, in favour of spatial continuity and everyday use.
The intervention improves comfort and spatial efficiency while remaining respectful of the original character of the house. The intervention retains a warm material palette, and a reuse of the traditional wooden mosaic floor and ceilings. The result is a restrained renovation that balances continuity and change, demonstrating how careful adaptation can offer a sustainable alternative to new construction.
