CHURCH OF THE SACRED FAMILY RESTORATION

This church was designed in 1969 by architect Paolo Portoghesi and engineer Vittorio Gigliotti for the city of Salerno. It is one of the few examples of modern churches whose design is based on the principles of the Second Vatican Council. At the same time, its design contains a number of references both to the history of architecture, particularly Borromini’s Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza in Rome, and the world of natural and organic shapes.

The restoration project focuses on the conservation of the concrete façade. Simultaneously, it aims to enhance the building by expanding its surroundings. The project was preceded by a thorough research work carried out in several historical archives, both private and public, and a precise measurement and redrawing of the current state of the building. The restoration project operates according to the principle of minimum intervention, carrying out operations only when they are absolutely necessary and aiming to minimize the effects of deterioration. Furthermore, the project focuses on ensuring technological compatibility between existing and new materials.
